BMP280 Sensor Module

The BMP280 sensor module is an absolute barometric pressure sensor specially designed for mobile applications. Its small dimensions and low power consumption allow for the implementation of compact battery-run devices like mobile phones and watches.

This BMP280 is a tiny Atmospheric Sensor Breakout to measure barometric pressure, and temperature readings all without taking up too much space. Basically, anything you need to know about atmospheric conditions you can find out from this tiny breakout. The BMP280 Breakout has been design to be used in indoor/outdoor navigation, weather forecasting, home automation, and even personal health and wellness monitoring.

This module uses an environmental sensor manufactured by Bosch with a temperature, and barometric pressure sensor that is the next generation upgrade to the popular BMP085/BMP180/BMP183 Sensor. This sensor is great for all sorts of weather sensing and can even be used in both I2C and SPI! This precision sensor from Bosch is the best low-cost, precision sensing solution for measuring barometric pressure with ±1 hPa absolute accuracy, and temperature with ±1.0°C accuracy. Because pressure changes with altitude and the pressure measurements are so good, you can also use it as an altimeter with ±1 meter accuracy.

The BMP280 is the next generation of sensors and is the upgrade to the BMP085/BMP180/BMP183 - with a low altitude noise of 0.25m and the same fast conversion time. It has the same specifications but can use either I2C or SPI. For simple easy wiring, go with I2C. If you want to connect a bunch of sensors without worrying about I2C address collisions, go with SPI.

Applications:

  • Enhancement of GPS navigation (e.g. time-to first-fix improvement, dead-reckoning, slope detection)
  • Indoor navigation (floor detection, elevator detection)
  • Outdoor navigation, leisure, and sports applications
  • Weather forecast
  • Health care applications (e.g. spirometry)

1.What is BMP280 used for?

  • BMP280 is a digital pressure sensor that is commonly used to measure atmospheric pressure and temperature. It is often used in applications such as weather forecasting, altitude measurement, and indoor air quality monitoring. It is a compact and low-power device that can be easily integrated into a wide range of systems and applications.  The sensor is calibrated at the factory and is able to measure pressure over a range of 300 to 1100 hPa with a resolution of 0.01 hPa. It can also measure temperature over a range of -40 to 85°C with a resolution of 0.01°C.

2.What is a BMP280?

  • BMP280 is a digital pressure sensor that is used to measure atmospheric pressure and temperature. It is a compact and low-power device that can be easily integrated into a wide range of systems and applications. The BMP280 operates by measuring the pressure and temperature of the air around it and outputting a digital signal that can be read by a microcontroller or other computer system. It is based on piezoresistive technology, which means that it uses a small change in resistance to measure the pressure applied to a diaphragm.

3.How does a BMP280 sensor work?

  • The BMP280 is a digital pressure sensor that uses piezoresistive technology to measure pressure and temperature. It is an absolute barometric pressure sensor, meaning that it can measure the pressure of the air around it and output an accurate reading in units of pascals (Pa). The sensor works by measuring the resistance of a small, thin membrane called a diaphragm, which is located at the bottom of the sensor. When the pressure of the air around the sensor changes, the diaphragm is deformed slightly, causing a change in resistance. This change in resistance is then measured by the sensor and used to calculate the pressure. The BMP280 also has a temperature sensor built into it, which allows it to measure the temperature of the air around it in addition to the pressure. The sensor uses a thermistor to measure temperature, which is a type of resistor that changes resistance based on temperature.

4.What is the difference between BME280 and BMP280?

  • The BME280 and BMP280 are both digital pressure and temperature sensors that use piezoresistive technology to measure these physical quantities. However, there are a few key differences between these two sensors:
    • Humidity sensing: The BME280 includes an additional humidity sensor, which allows it to measure the relative humidity of the air in addition to pressure and temperature. The BMP280 does not have this capability.
    • Package size: The BME280 is slightly larger than the BMP280, as it includes the additional humidity sensor.
    • Sampling rate: The BME280 can sample at a higher rate than the BMP280, with a maximum rate of 20 samples per second compared to the BMP280's maximum of 10 samples per second.
    • Operating range: The BME280 has a slightly wider operating range than the BMP280, with a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C compared to the BMP280's range of -40°C to +85°C.
