1/2 Inch Water Flow Sensor - YF-S201

The YF-S201 water flow sensor is a device that is used to measure the flow rate of water. It consists of a turbine-type rotor that is placed in the water stream, and as the water flows past the rotor, it causes the rotor to spin. The sensor measures the speed of the rotor and converts it to a flow rate. The sensor has a digital output, which means that it provides a digital signal that can be read by a microcontroller or other host device.
The sensor is commonly used in applications such as irrigation systems, water treatment plants, and industrial process control. It is often preferred over other types of flow sensors because it is easy to install and has a low cost. Water flow sensors are installed at the water source or in pipes to measure the rate of flow and calculate the amount of water that has passed through the pipe. Water flow is measured in liters per hour or cubic meters.

Working:

A water flow sensor is made up of a plastic valve through which water can pass. A water rotor and a hall effect sensor are used to sense and measure the flow of water.

When water flows through the valve, it causes the rotor to rotate. The motor's speed can be changed as a result of this. The hall effect sensor calculates this change and outputs it as a pulse signal. The rate of flow of water can thus be measured.

The Hall effect is the primary operating principle of this sensor. The rotation of the rotor induces a voltage difference in the conductor in this sensor, according to this principle. This induced voltage difference runs in the opposite direction of the electric current. When the moving fan rotates due to the flow of water, the rotor rotates, inducing a voltage. The hall effect sensor measures the induced voltage and displays it on the LCD display.

The water flow sensor can be used with hot, cold, or warm water, as well as clean or dirty water. A microcontroller board such as Arduino , Raspberry pi, a LCD display or OLED Display , Breadboard and connecting wires are required for this. The sensor is installed at the water source inlet or the pipe opening. Three wires are connected to the sensor. The red wire connects to the supply voltage. A black wire connects to the ground, and a yellow wire collects the Hall effect sensor output. 5V to 18V DC is required for supply voltage.

1. How does a water flow sensor work?

  • A water flow sensor is made up of a plastic valve that allows water to pass through. The flow of water is sensed and measured using a water rotor and a hall effect sensor. When water flows through the valve, the rotor rotates. As a result, the motor's speed can be changed. This change is calculated by the hall effect sensor and output as a pulse signal. The flow rate of water can thus be measured.

2. Where are water flow sensors used?

  • A water flow sensor is installed at a water source or pipe to measure the flow rate of water and calculate the amount of water that has passed through the pipe. It is used in flowmeters for water heaters and vending machines.

3. How do I choose a water flow sensor?

  • Choosing a water flow sensor can depend on the following factors:
  • Operating pressure and pipe diameter
  • Volume of the fluid flowing at a time
  • Flow rate of the water flow sensor
