Are DC fans better than AC fans?

DC fans are generally better than their Ac counterparts.

  1. In most cases, they use less energy – up to 70% less than a standard AC fan.
  2. They are generally extremely quiet.
  3. They will often have more speed options, the reverse function on the remote, and are generally faster to start, stop and change speed.
  4. The motor is generally more compact and lighter, which allows for a slimmer motor design.

How do DC fans work?

A DC ceiling fan works pretty much on the same principle as the DC motor. A DC motor uses an internal arrangement of magnets with opposing polarity. As current passes through the coil around this arrangement, a strong magnetic field is produced. This magnetic field then creates a torque that causes the motor to rotate. Ceiling fans specifically use the brushless DC motor, that is, the synchronous DC motor.

What is the difference between DC fans and AC fans?

The difference between the two fans lies in the way they operate. AC motor fans operate by  directly connecting it to standard power that creates the energy and force needed to run the motor. DC fans have an in-built transformer that converts the standard power to DC. This decreases the amount of power used on all fan speeds, as the fan is only utilising a direct current instead of an alternating current.

How to power a DC fan?

A DC fan can be powered directly via battery or by plugging it directly into the GPIO power pin for instant cooling effect. It can also be powered via AC power supply by using AC to DC converter.

How to wire a DC fan?

A DC fan is generally powered directly using a battery. In order to wire a DC Fan to an AC Adapter, you need a soldering gun, AC Adapter and mini DC fan. Firstly you need to strip the cables of both the DC Fan and the AC Adapter. Manually connect the wires of the DC Fan and the AC adapter by twisting them. Then with the help of some solder and the soldering iron, connect the two wires. You need wear the appropriate safety gear before soldering since they release harmful fumes. After soldering, plug the AC Adapter and you are ready to use your DC Fan.
